House Lawmaker Doubts Effectiveness of Social Restrictions

A House of Representatives (DPR) Commission IX lawmaker, Saleh Daulay, took a less than positive stand and doubted that the large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) imposed on the Greater Jakarta area would be able to break the coronavirus chain of transmission.

The National Mandate Party (PAN) politician argued that the implementation of PSBB showed no significant differences compared to the previous social restriction policies.

“It seems that there are no significant changes from social distancing to physical distancing, which then changed to the PSBB,” said Saleh on Monday, April 13.

He said he had kept on witnessing large crowds of people commuting to their workplaces, with one prominent example happening at a number of commuter lines and train services across the Greater Jakarta area.

He maintained that the aforementioned social phenomenon was hard proof that the PSBB was a policy difficult to implement as it did not only depend on people’s discipline but also the government’s role to provide for affected residents.

He said the government had not yet guaranteed the welfare of its people who stayed at home during the coronavirus outbreak.
